On the occasion of World Television Day, which is observed on November 21, Devanggana Chauhan, who has been part of shows like Drive with Nano (season 3), which she won, and Dhadkan Zindaggi Kii, Sapnon Ki Chhalaang, and Saavi ki Savaari, to name a few, said, “I feel television has played a very big role in influencing society. I remember the time when there was the revelation of the Saas-Bahu drama and its impact on society.”
She shared that as a kid, when she would go to shops, they would sell products, saying it was the same as Bhabho in Diya Aur Baati Hum or Tulsi saare. “Things have changed a lot now, but people have been influenced a lot by TV and TV shows, be it looks, character, or the celebrations,” she said.
She pointed out that television is very relatable and believes that people start getting influenced by the characters they see on-screen. “Every person who has been watching television slowly starts seeing the character in themselves, and sitting in the house, the characters and the viewers start connecting. It is not just about the serials but also about the news, music, and movies that we get to see,” she said.
“Television has become more realistic, and even the audiences have become more realistic. TV is in the absolving stage right now. I also don’t think that there is a need to compare OTT with TV, as both of them have their own charms,” she added.
A total 90’s kid, Devanggana grew up watching Surbhi and Chitrahar on Doordarshan. She added, “I remember the time when there was a cartoon channel where in India you could see cartoons for two hours. And over the period of time when daily soaps came in, it was a total game changer. I remember the whole family sitting there watching the whole series and dramas together. I have seen those changes, and I miss it.”
A TV show that has left an impact on you? “I remember a show for the kids and Son Pari, Shaka Laka Boom Boom. All these shows I could relate to, and the best part was at the ending of every episode there was a message for the kids to learn and grow in life,” she ended.
